SRINAGAR, SEPT 16: In a series of operations aimed at combating the drug menace in Jammu and Kashmir, police arrested five individuals involved in drug peddling in Anantnag and recovered a substantial quantity of psychotropic and contraband substances. The arrests were made during coordinated efforts in different parts of the district, according to a police spokesperson.

In one significant operation, a police team from Police Station (PS) Mattan set up a checkpoint at Bumzoo Mattan and intercepted an Innova vehicle (JK02DK/9333) with three individuals on board. Upon searching the vehicle, authorities found 11 bottles of Codeine Phosphate, 80 Dolo-T tablets, 70 OMODOL tablets, a significant quantity of beer and alcohol, and Rs 11,500 in cash. The three accused—Lateef Ahmad Shah, son of Mohammad Qasim Shah from Mattan; Ayaz Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohammad Amin Bhat from Seer Hamdan; and Rayees Ahmad Malik, son of Gh Mohammad Malik from Sarnal Payeen—were arrested on the spot, and the contraband, along with the vehicle, was seized.

In a separate action, a police team from Anantnag Police Station intercepted an auto-rickshaw (JK01AK-7694) near Wazir Bagh Park, Anantnag. The vehicle, traveling from Bangdar towards Mehandi Kadal, was found carrying a significant quantity of illicit liquor. The driver, Riyaz Ahmad Dar, son of Gh Qadir Dar from Zadipora, was arrested, and the auto was seized.

Additionally, a police team from the Sangam Police Post apprehended Noor Mohammad Ganie, son of Ab Rahim Ganie from Marhama, during a checkpoint at Kudangan Marhama. Ganie was found carrying a bag containing a substantial quantity of alcohol. He was taken into custody, and the contraband was seized on the spot.

All five accused have been shifted to respective police stations, where they remain in custody. Cases have been registered under relevant sections of law, and further investigations are ongoing.

Police have urged the public to cooperate in curbing the drug menace and reiterated their commitment to taking strict action against those involved in drug-related crimes.
