Jammu, Jan 7:

In a significant move to bolster the security apparatus in the Udhampur district, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Northern Command, visited the Basantgarh region to assess the counter-terrorism grid and operational readiness of the units stationed there.

Focus on Operational Preparedness

During the visit, the Army Commander conducted a comprehensive review of the prevailing security situation in the hinterland. He was briefed by field commanders on the changing operational landscape and the tactical measures being implemented to neutralize emerging threats.

The deliberations primarily focused on:

  • Reinforcing the Security Architecture: Evaluating the current deployment and strengthening the inner layers of the counter-terror grid.

  • Stakeholder Coordination: Enhancing synergy between the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and other security agencies to ensure a seamless flow of intelligence and operational response.

  • Vigilance in Challenging Terrain: Basantgarh, known for its dense forests and hilly topography, has been a focus area following recent terror incidents in the Udhampur-Kathua belt.

Lt Gen Pratik Sharma interacted extensively with the commanders and soldiers on the ground. He commended the troops for their unwavering determination and professional excellence in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

“The Army Commander exhorted all ranks to remain proactive and vigilant against the emerging threats in the hinterland, emphasizing the need for the highest standards of operational readiness,” stated a post from the Northern Command.

Basantgarh serves as a crucial link between Udhampur, Kathua, and Doda districts. Given its proximity to dense forest routes often exploited by infiltrating groups, the Northern Command has intensified its presence and surveillance in the area to prevent any attempt at disrupting the regional peace.

This visit follows a series of high-level security meetings in early 2026, signaling the Indian Army’s commitment to a “zero-tolerance” policy toward terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
